What Is ACT?

ACT is a type of psychotherapy based heavily on mindfulness practices to help each client emotionally situate themselves in the present moment. Anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, and more all create tumultuous emotional states, and clients may feel out of control of their actions in these times of difficulty. ACT’s flexibility – and the wide array of implementation practices available at The Redpoint Center – ensure that each client has their own way to develop effective practices and build newfound resilience.

The Goals of ACT

Trying to repress difficult emotions like anxiety, sadness, or grief can lead to even more complex situations, and self-destructive behaviors can result from ignoring these intense emotions. Rather than trying to push down these feelings, ACT instead guides clients toward understanding and acknowledging their impact. By accepting these difficult emotions, clients are empowered to navigate them alongside trained, caring clinicians through safe and guided channels. Rather than making rash decisions in the face of such tumultuous emotions, clients learn to embrace a greater sense of agency over how much and in what way these emotions affect their lives.

Through ACT, clients can better control their direction in daily life while distancing themselves from other, more destructive thoughts and perspectives. Committing oneself to certain goals, such as being present for family, pursuing professional advancement, and cultivating responsibility and acceptance among loved ones empowers clients to identify actions that may act counter to these commitments. Even in the midst of trying emotional turmoil, effectively processing these feelings in a positive way ensures clients maintain a commitment to their transformative efforts in sobriety.

The 3 Pillars of ACT

Effective use of ACT takes place in three distinct stages as clients navigate their emotional states. These are acceptance, direction, and action.

Acceptance

This is the most crucial phase of effective ACT. Accepting that one is allowed to feel and experience difficult emotions, clients can be more cognizant of how such emotions impact their perception of reality, emotional impulses, and self-destructive behaviors. Accepting that feelings of anxiety, depression, fear, distress, and more are normal is a core part of ACT. Accepting one’s emotions for what they are is what enables clients to regain agency over their responses.

Direction

Using mindfulness practices such as breathing and tactile sensations, clients will situate themselves in the present and decide upon healthy, intentional courses of action to process their emotions. Deciding to engage in a particular strategy or activity puts the control back in the client’s hands, improving a sense of change and accountability.

Action

Clients will decide on which course of action is best for them, and remain resilient in their decision despite any other emotional trials that may present themselves. By committing themselves to a particular action, clients can continually refocus on their own decisions and intentions to maintain this newfound positive direction.
